Dunga explicou, utilizando o tabuleiro do curso, que a segunda linha formava-se com Mazinho aberto na direita, Zinho na esquerda, Mauro Silva e ele centralizados. Mazinho protegia Jorginho, Zinho guarnecia Branco, e os volantes mantinham um escudo frente aos zagueiros. Ainda sem a bola, Romário recuava até o meio-campo, centralizado, para buscar a bola e iniciar o contra-ataque, quase como um ‘enganche’ do 4-4-1-1 britânico.
Com a bola, pelo menos um dos meias – geralmente Zinho – centralizava em diagonal do lado para o meio, enquanto Romário adiantava-se para formar o ataque com Bebeto. Era de Dunga o papel da transição ofensiva.
